The newly elected Pope Francis was a disciple of Ukrainian priest Stepan Chmil, primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Patriarch Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) said, the UGCC information department informs.

“The new Pope, and then a student of Salesian school, every day early in the morning, helped Father Stepan Chmil during the divine office," he specified.

The primate of the UGCC said that the Pope knows well our rite and remembers our liturgy. "When saying goodbye to Argentina and leaving for Ukraine, I once visited him and asked him to give his testimony for beatification of Father Stepan Chmil. His Holiness knows very well about our church, our liturgy and rite, our spirituality," he noted.

He added that Cardinal Bergoglio "has always taken care of our church in Argentina .. Therefore, I think we're really going to have the Holiest Father, who will take care of our Church. And I hope that this Pope will bring very good things in the future," His Beatitude Sviatoslav added.

In his commentary, head of the UGCC also noted that the newly elected Pope is a very humble man.

"For example, in Buenos Aires, he never used his car, always went by public transport, was very modestly dressed and took care about the poor. He visited people in poor neighborhoods. He is a true pastor," primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church described the newly elected Pope.
