The reform of local self-government should ensure the development of self-sufficient regions, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych told journalists in Odesa, ForUm learned from the press service of the President.
"The reform of local self-government will create conditions for the development of regional self-sufficiency and improve the quality of life," Yanukovych noted.
According to the President, decentralization of the government should provide a gradual transfer of powers from central government to local self-government. According to him, this will improve a fairness of the decision-making on many issues.
In his opinion, the development of the regional strategy should also belong to the competence of local authorities. Certainly, the reform of local self-government should pass gradually and consistently. "But we should notice a progress from year to year," Yanukovych said.
