The Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Armed Forces must jointly prepare a realistic Concept of radical and effective reform of the Ukrainian army, President Viktor Yanukovych said during today’s presentation of the new Minister of Defense, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.
"These documents should take into account the non-alignment policy of our country, recent changes in the military and political situation in the region, and be based on the adequate assessment of available resources, including those economic," said Viktor Yanukovych.
The President also pointed to the need to increase the intensity of combat training of troops. According to him, the military should not sit idly in the barracks. "Their place is not on the parade ground, but training at the controls of a military vehicle," he said.
The President said he expects the Government to take real steps to address the problem of providing military men with housing and increase their salaries.
"I am looking forward to the soon concrete results. The time of futile talk about the military reform has passed. You can count on my support in your concrete steps," he said, referring to the newly appointed Minister of Defense.
