The opposition will be calling for a nationwide referendum to extend the moratorium on the sale of agricultural land, Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has said.

"During the meeting of the opposition we decided to initiate a national referendum to stop the sale of agricultural land. They want to introduce a new "voucher" program with land. They gave up a part of the territory of Crimea with the Kharkiv agreements, and now with the sale of agricultural land they plan to give up the territory of Ukraine. We demand a referendum," Tymoshenko's official website cited the opposition leader.

On April 15 Yulia Tymoshenko announced that the government is considering lifting the moratorium on the sale of agricultural land as a means of creating yet another monopoly controlled by its closest associates.

"They consider land the most profitable program and see only themselves participating in it. They have in their hands the National Bank, they have in their hands the lending machine, and they will approach land the same way they once did factories and will be dividing it among their closest companions, who will then own those pieces of land that they’re trying to turn into a commodity," said Yulia Tymoshenko.

As reported, in early March the Verkhovna Rada failed to extend the moratorium on sale of agricultural land through January 1, 2015 following an unsuccessful vote for the Law "On amending points 14 and 15 of Section X "Transitional Provisions" of the Land Code of Ukraine concerning the period of sale of land plots".
