At a joint news conference with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Victor Yushchenko said he expected participants of the WTO summit in Hong Kong to accept Ukraine as a new member, the President's press office reported.

However, in an interview with reporters he said that Ukraine “needs some time, at least until the parliamentary elections, to answer all questions about WTO membership which have not been answered yet.”

The President said Ukraine should still sign bilateral protocols with 8-9 countries to observe all procedures. He noted that it was particularly important to sign such protocols with the United States and Australia and added that he hoped they would be signed.

“I believe that the things we offer will make America and Australia accept our propositions,” he said.

Yushchenko reiterated that Ukraine had adopted “85% of tariff regulations stipulated by WTO documents.”
