In New York, Victor Yushchenko met with UNO Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The sides discussed a plan to hold a UNO General Assembly meeting to mark the 20th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster. They agreed that the world community should more actively raise funds to construct a shield at the atomic power plant.

Yushchenko and Annan also discussed a conflict over the Ukrainians troopers in Lebanon. The Head of State said acting Defense Minister Anatoly Hrytsenko and acting Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk were controlling the investigation.

Summing up his impressions about the first meetings in the United States, Yushchenko said he was pleased.

“It is easy to see that Ukraine is important, Ukraine is significant and its international role is appreciated,” stressed the President.
