Granting Ukraine observer status in the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council ultimately implies joining the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and subsequently the Eurasian Economic Union, deputy Secretary General of the Eurasian Economic Community Sergey Glazyev stated.

"We proceed from the fact that granting Ukraine the observer status in the Eurasian Economic Union, which is now being formed, means Ukraine's intention to enter this union. Since the observer status is granted only to those states, which want to enter our integration association," Glazyev explained.

He added that Ukraine will be able to join the Eurasian Union after joining the Customs Union. Glazyev noted that in that case Ukraine will not be able to participate in similar agreements with the EU.
