OAO "Gazprom" is not going to discuss the changing conditions under effective gas contract and believes that Ukraine should pay in full the bill for unused gas it was contracted to buy last year, deputy CEO of the Russian company Alexander Medvedev said in an interview with British newspaper "Financial Times".

"I never thought that Ukraine refuses to fulfill its obligations. After all, there is a "take or pay" principle, under which you still have to pay for services, even if you do not want to use them," he said.

"According to the contract of 2009, the National Joint Stock Company Naftogaz Ukraine must buy from us 42.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually. - he explained. - In the last year, were sold only 60 percent of this amount. The fact that the Ukrainian side said in advance that it does not need all the gas volume does not change anything," Medvedev said.

According to him, the bill is not a response to a contract, signed between Kyiv with the Royal Dutch Shell. The fact is that in late January the Ukrainian side signed with oil and gas giant the agreement to develop Yuzovsky field (Kharkiv and Donetsk region), with estimated reserves of more than 4 trillion cubic meters of gas. As many commentators note, this move should help the country to develop its own production and reduce dependence on Russian "blue fuel" supplies.

"These events are not connected in any way," deputy Gazprom CEO said.
