At the beginning of the year of elections to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukrainian TV channels avoided detailed coverage of political news. This is evidenced by the study Monitoring of Ukrainian News conducted by the Academy of Ukrainian Press with the participation of the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, UKRINFORM reports.

Only every fifth message in the news concerns politics, and the theme of the 2012 election is not discussed at all.

According to the study, two types of events dominated the news in February: accidents - 16%, as well as frosts and snowstorms - 15%. 10% of the events cover tensions between Russia and Ukraine on gas, cheese issues and bilateral relations.

Elections 2012 were mentioned only in the context of other events (2%), i.e. the subject has never been the main event.

As in September last year, the attention of TV channels to reform in Ukraine is minimal (1%), as well as to the election of a new Commissioner for Human Rights (2%).

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada will soon take a decision on plans to ensure unimpeded activities of the mass media during the election period in 2012.
