President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko participated in ceremony of a wreath-laying to the monument to Chernobyl workers.
Viktor Yushchenko came to the square where the barrow was set about at 1 a.m. He was accompanied by the VRU speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn, NSDC head Raisa Bohatyryova and other officials and political figures, as well as Chornobyl accident liguidators and friends and relatives of the killed people. Yulia Tymoshenko was not present at the ceremony.
The ceremony strated with the liquidators of the Chornobyl accident were laying flowers and wreaths to the Memorial barrow “To the Heroes of Chornobyl”. After that power representatives and officials laid flowers.
After that there was a service to victims’ memory.
23 strikes of bell symbolized 23 years since the catastrophe.
As a reminder, accident in Chornobyl happened on April 26, 1986 when one of the reactors exploded contaminating Ukraine, Russia and Belarus with the fallout also spreading to other parts of Europe.
According to official data in total about 5 million people suffered as a result of the catastrophe.
