Ukraine actively works to increase energy efficiency of economy which is essential for energy independence of the country, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych stated in the course of the communication with journalists in Svitlodarsk (Donetsk region), the press service of the head of state reports.

The Head of State noted that Ukraine paid the highest price for gas in Europe. "We cannot buy gas for such a high price. We will do everything to reduce our purchase of the expensive gas and find the cheaper gas. Thus, we will diversify our sources of gas supply," the President said reminding that in 2010, Ukraine had bought 42 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia and in 2013, it would buy 18 billion.

Viktor Yanukovych stressed that the programs of energy efficiency and energy preservation had already brought good results.

Moreover, according to him, Ukraine has increased its own production of gas in the last 2 years up to 21 billion cubic meters. "We have set a task to produce more own gas," Viktor Yanukovych noted expressing confidence that the volume of gas production could be increased by 24 billion cubic meters. "Soon, we will achieve this volume," the President emphasized.

According to him, our country exports electricity today - which is economically beneficial - and continues to expand energy infrastructure. "We are building power transmission lines and water-storage units. This work never stops," Viktor Yanukovych said.

The President reminded that Ukraine increased coal production and conducted works on the replacement of gas with coal using air-coal and water-coal mixtures. He also added that Ukraine was planning to build plants producing synthetic gas from coal.

In that context, Viktor Yanukovych noted the importance of modernizing old mines and building the new ones.

According to the Head of State, such measures facilitate strengthening of energy independence of Ukraine.
