Tariffs for heat and hot water will rise by 20-25% following a rise in natural gas prices for the public, Ukrainian Housing and Utilities Minister Yuriy Khivrych said.

"Due to the fact that the share of gas in the cost of heat and hot water averages 53%, then, according to our calculations, the tariffs for heat and water supplies will rise by 20-25%," he said.

The minister said that at the heat and water supplying enterprises actively involved in the introduction of energy-saving technologies, the share of gas in the cost of heat and hot water ranges between 45% and 53%, while at the enterprises where this issue is not being worked out so thoroughly the share of gas is 60%.

As reported, the retail prices of natural gas for the public will grow by 50% from August 1, 2010. A respective decision was taken by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission of Ukraine on July 13, 2010. The commission also decided to increase from August 1, 2010 a price ceiling for natural gas for thermal power plants supplying heat and hot water to the public.
