Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov regrets that the EU has not been active in the issue of the Ukrainian GTS modernization.
According to Azarov’s press secretary Vitaliy Lukyanenko, Azarov said this during the meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
The Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine has been the member of the European Energy Charter for the second year already, but so far the EU has not supported Ukraine in negotiations with Russia on the reduction in gas price of has not addressed the issue of a tripartite consortium to manage the Ukrainian GTS.
"The question arises, why should Ukraine maintain a very expensive and powerful GTS, if consumers in the European Union do not show interest in the modernization of the GTS, and suppliers to Russia are building a bypass route of supply?" press secretary quoted Azarov.
In addition, Azarov said that the transit of gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system is the safest way for the supply of Russian gas to the EU.
As reported, in the first half of September this year, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said that the modernization of the country's main strategic facility - gas transportation system - will cost 4.5 billion euros.
According to Azarov, the Ukrainian government offers to delegate control over GTS to the international consortium consisting of Ukraine, Russia and the EU, which would ensure its transparency and fair administration and begin its modernization
