12 million Ukrainians live in zones of possible chemical contamination and potentially dangerous objects, Emergency Ministry official Mikhailo Baitala told a briefing.

"There are 1211 functioning objects in Ukraine, which keep or use more than 805 thousand tons of dangerous chemicals, including 6 thousand tons of chlorine, 176 thousand tons of ammonia and more than 623 thousand tons of other dangerous chemicals," Baitala said. 

He noted that only in Kyiv almost 2/3 of the territory falls under the risk of contamination due to possible emergency situations on chemical objects.

The official informed that Ukraine numbers more than 24 thousand of potentially dangerous objects, 6.5 thousand of which are of high danger. 41% of the total number is fire hazardous objects, 37% is explosion hazardous, 7.9% - chemically hazardous, 2.1% - radiation hazardous, 1.85% - hydrodynamic hazardous and 1.8% - biologically hazardous objects.

According to Baitala, the most number of dangerous objects is located on the territory of Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Lviv regions.

At the same time he noted that the State inspection on technogenic safety constantly holds planned and emergency security control on the given objects.
