President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko intends to veto amendments adopted by the VRU to the law on presidential elections, which reduce the period of presidential election campaign. Press secretary of the President Iryna Vannykova said that today.

"The President considers the amendments to the legislation on Ukrainian presidential elections that the parliament adopted as a step back from democracy. Taking it into consideration the President has a right to veto this law," Vannykova said, ForUm’s correspondent informs, referring to Interfax-Ukraine.

According to Yushchenko, the adopted amendments to the law reduce the rights and freedoms of citizens and complicates the mechanism of the control over elections, she noted..

As a reminder, on July 24 the parliament adopted draft law that reduces the period of presidential election campaign from 120 to 90 days. The draft law also foresees the cancelation of “detachable” bulletins for voting and increase of level of loan for the candidate at amount of 2.5 million hryvnyas.

The Presidential election will take place on January 17, 2010.
