There are more arguments for a presidential election by parliament, than for the election of the head of state via a national poll, Regions Party deputy leader Anna Herman has said, Kyiv Post reported.

"We need a stable, strong, united and unitary democratic Ukraine. A Ukraine of this kind will be impossible if we continue following the policy of populism… Ukraine needs reforms, rather than populism, and this is an argument favoring the election of the president by parliament," she said at a briefing in the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday.

Herman said that the legal election of the president was more important than the method of his election.

She said that three presidents had been elected in a national vote, "but every year, the country has had a worse life, and you see what its life is like now."
