Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has amended the State Target Economic Program "Nuclear Fuel of Ukraine." According to experts at the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, the changers were prepared in order to extend the schedule of measures aimed to ensure the independence of Ukraine from imported natural uranium, zirconium, and nuclear fuel till 2020, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

The schedule extension and allocation of state budget funds for implementation of its tasks and measures, provides for the construction of a nuclear fuel plant, as well as the development and approval a new version of the Program, which would comply with requirements of nuclear industry development in Ukraine, experts say.
Analysts say it is importantant to use the scientific-technological potential of Ukrainian enterprises involved in manufacturing nuclear fuel in the Program.

Experts note that it is required to finalize the nuclear plant designs in order to start construction. But scientific, design, and IT support of nuclear fuel facilities involves a substantial range of actions. They include additional scientific-research and research-development for improving mining technology, processing raw uranium, protecting plant workers and the population from radiation, decommissioning facilities, assessing impact on the environment, and technically upgrading research institutions and design bureaus.

According to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), by 2050, the scope of energy production by nuclear power plants will be tripled, given that new technologies will be implemented and introduced, and total energy consumption will keep growing.
