Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a draft presidential decree on establishment of the National Agency for Infrastructure Projects (NAIP), the Information-analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

The new agency will implement the state policy to develop sports, touristic, transport, and social infrastructure. The document describes supported activities, such as for the Continental Basketball Championship in 2015 and qualification tournaments for Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2022.

NAIP will focus on stadiums and transport infrastructure. For the European Basketball Championship 2015, which will be attended by the 24 best teams of the continent, six new stadiums will be built in the cities of Odessa (7,500 seats during sporting events); Lviv, Dnepropetrovsk, and Kharkov — 6.000 seats each; Donetsk — 8.000–10.000 seats and Kyiv — 16.000 seats.

Private investors and the government will have to invest about 4.3 billion UAH in construction of quality, European-level sports arenas.

Experts say the main challenge facing the National agency is developing a structural program for the right to host the Winter Olympic Games 2022 in Ukraine by Nov. 2013 (the final date of formal application to host the XXIV Winter Olympic Games).

Experts say the main expenditure items for preparation to Olympics (if it takes place in Ukraine) will include construction and upgrade of infrastructure. It will be necessary to build even more than for Euro 2012–5 ice arenas (for figure skating, ice hockey, short track, and curling) and outdoor ice stadium, the Olympic village, media center, ski slopes and ski jumps. In fact, transport infrastructure of Carpathian region shall be significantly improved.

NOC analysts expert sporting events will gather up to 100,000 participants and guests and will attract over 500,000 tourists. Some 3 billion people across the world will watch the games on television.
