The State Anti-drug Strategy till 2020 has been approved in Ukraine, chairman of the State Service of Ukraine for Drug Control Volodymyr Tymoshenko told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

"This is an important event for Ukraine, because our country is a party to the three UN Conventions against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs under which all countries should develop appropriate strategies," he said.

He said the strategy was developed in Ukraine for three years.

Tymoshenko noted that the Interior Ministry and the Health Ministry keep records of drug addicts in our country.

"According to the Interior Ministry, there are 152 thousand registered drug addicts, but according to statistics from the Health Ministry – there are about 130-150 thousand. However, there are also indirect estimates of invisible part of the iceberg. In particular, the number of injectors in Ukraine is 287-380 thousand," he informed.

Tymoshenko also cited statistics on drug addicts in Ukraine over the past three years.

"60-72% of drug takers are consumers of opioids, it is poppy straw. About 7-9% - marijuana and cannabis takers, 20% take ecstasy, amphetamine, etc., and 1-3% take "open" drugs (e.g. tramadol)," Tymoshenko summed up.
