A leading researcher for energy and nuclear safety at Ukraine's National Institute for Strategic Studies, Olha Kosharna, has said that the construction of a storage facility for spent nuclear waste in Ukraine is economically advantageous to the country.

"The construction of the storage facility fully meets the national interests of Ukraine... It is an economically advantageous project in Ukraine," she said, National radio reported.

Kosharna noted that Russia, which receives spent nuclear waste from Ukraine for recycling, was increasing prices for these services every year. "According to the latest figures, they set such a price that exceeds the average price in Europe, i.e. 1,500 dollars per kilogram of heavy metal. On average, Ukraine should remove up to 100 tons [of spent nuclear fuel], so we can count how much it will cost," she said.
