Today, the extraordinary session of the Donetsk regional council granted the Russian language the status of the regional.
117 out of 118 deputies present in the hall supported this decision. "To inform the residents of Donetsk region that in accordance with article 7 of the law of Ukraine "On principles of state language policy", on the basis of All-Ukrainian population census of 2001 on the linguistic structure of the population, the Russian language becomes a regional language in Donetsk," the decision says.
The session also recommended city and village councils to consider the issues of implementation of the regional or minority languages on relevant territories in the cases provided by law.
