Ukraine may be energy independent due to alternative energy sources, head of the Parliament’s committee on agrarian policy and land relations, MP from the Party of Regions Hryhoriy Kaletnyk said at the International Bioenergy Forum, ForUm correspondent reports.

MP said that the potential of land resources of the country and biomass production on them can cover national energy demand. "Scientists estimate that biomass from 10 million hectares would completely eliminate the problem of oil imports, and this is 80% of total consumption," he noted.

Kaletnyk also added that alternative energy allows looking to the future more confidently, given the global trend of rise in oil and gas price. "We can refuse energy imports, as Brazil did. Our crop area of 32 million hectares allows doing that. In addition, lands, not suitable for traditional agricultural products, may be used for cultivation of energy crops," the expert added.

According to him, today there is a number of modern bioenergy technologies and a number of biomass sources, including wood waste. "Agriculture waste is straw, manure, food industry waste," Kaletnyk specified.
