Ukraine strives for achieving the living standards of the most developed EU countries. One of the most important tasks in this way is approaching the level of consumer protection to the European standards, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDCU) Andriy Kluyiev said, commenting on the Cabinet of Ministers approval of the draft presidential decree on the principles of public policy in the consumer protection area, ForUm earned from the NSDCU press office.

He said that today the work on improving consumer rights protection in Ukraine is carried out in many directions.

Kluyiev expressed confidence that the quality of goods consumed by the Ukrainians is the important component of the national security. This is especially true for the quality of food, water, clothing, baby goods and medicines, the NSDC secretary said. He said that currently the government is working on a number of draft resolutions on improving the market medicines based on the proposals of the National Security and Defence Council.

"We have to admit that we live in a consumer society. Thus, the formation of a responsible attitude to the goods and services supplied is an essential element of the civilized relations between business and consumers," Kluyiev said.

He stated that the implementation of this initiative will give the opportunity to build an integrated system of consumer protection and to include it in not only the legislative and executive authorities, but also the local authorities, and, foremost, the NGOs. The partnership of the central and the local authorities with the public activists is the important component of the fight against careless businessmen whose activities often put at risks the lives and health of citizens, the NSDC secretary said. He added that to establish such partnership it is necessary to create appropriate institutions and procedures.

On Monday, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine passed the draft presidential decree on the principles of public policy in the consumer protection area.

“Considering the current state of the market economy in Ukraine and the importance of bringing the level of consumer rights protection in conformity with the EU norms, it became necessary to adopt the Concept of state policy in this area,” the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said.
The document proposes to determine the direction and the mechanisms for implementing the state policy in the consumer protection area.
