German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not visit Ukraine to attend the EURO 2012 group stage matches of the German national football team.

President of the German Football Association Wolfgang Niersbach announced this in an interview with the Bild newspaper, UKRINFORM reports.

"Unfortunately, the chancellor will not attend group stage matches," he said. Niersbach said that it was not yet clear whether the German chancellor will attend further EURO 2012 matches if the German team successfully qualifies from the group stage.

The head of the German Football Association confirmed that German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich would also not attend EURO 2012 group games. Niersbach said that German Ambassador to Ukraine Has-Jurgen Heimsoeth would attend Saturday's game between Germany and Portugal.

As reported, Germany will play their three group matches in Ukraine - on June 9 in Lviv against Portugal, on June 13 in Kharkiv against the Netherlands and on June 17 in Lviv against Denmark.
