The draft bill "on state language policy" does no split the country, but on the contrary represents a compromise, Party of Regions faction leader Oleksandr Yefremov told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

"This draft bill gives answers to the questions, raised back in 2004. I believe that after its adoption all discussions on language issue will stop. We must find a consensus and put a period. And this draft bill is the one which represents consensus and meets the requirements of the European charter on regional languages," he explained.

According to the MP, Ukrainian remains the state language, while on the territory with relatively big percentage of non-Ukrainian speakers regional and district councils will have a right to establish an additional official language.

The MP also noted that criticizing this draft bill the opposition just uses the issue as a chance to talk.
Yefremov informed that the parliament would consider all draft bills on languages ever registered.
