The government of Ukraine conducts a consistent policy of social protection of Chornobyl victims, President Viktor Yanukovych told journalists during his today’s visit at the Chornobyl NPP, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

The President noted that in 2011 and 2012, the government adopted a series of decisions to increase pensions and social benefits to the Liquidators of the Chornobyl accident. "In many cases, the payments have doubled," he said.

Viktor Yanukovych also reminded that the Liquidators and persons with disabilities due to the Chornobyl disaster were given the same status as Great Patriotic War veterans concerning pensions. He added that many charitable foundations are helping in the treatment of children victims of Chornobyl. "We are well aware that this tragedy cannot be overcome alone," he said.
