Vice President of the European Parliament Jacek Protasiewicz says that former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s release from prison is the key to fix the relations between Ukraine and the European Union.

"Relations between Ukraine and the EU have reached a deadlock. But the key to resolve this problem is in the hands of the Ukrainian authorities. The release of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is the key to fix these relations," Jacek Protasiewicz said during a meeting with BYuT leaders.

Commenting on the statement by EU official, member of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction Vitalii Zablotskyi said that the legislation of a number of European countries includes regulations similar to those provided by Art. 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, under which former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was processed and convicted.

The practice of criminal prosecution of former authorities exists in many European countries and the United States, the MP noted. "It exists in the United States, it exists in France, Sweden, Romania and in many other countries of the European Union. So, when they say it is necessary to bring our Criminal Procedure Code in accordance with the European, a question rises: what country is it about?" argued Vitalii Zablotskyi.

"I want to say that among the fundamental European values there is such a virtue as respect for formal law or Roman law. Where there are evidences, there is a judicial procedure, where there is a prosecution, there is a defense. No country experienced a situation when despite the guilty verdict by courts of all instances someone was fully amnestied for political reasons. I want to say that, if we approach from a technological point of view, the defense of Yulia Tymoshenko was carried out in three directions - court hearings, media and street. And the opposition has lost in all of them," he explained.

According to the parliamentarian, after the total defeat the defense of Tymoshenko "can only appeal to European structures, to the European partners, who currently formulate metaphorical requirements: the key is there."

"Well, the situation is not a fairy tale about Pinocchio and Golden Key, the matter is way more serious," Vitalii Zablotskyi summed up.
