Poverty remains one of the most urgent problems in Ukraine, ombudsperson Nina Karpachyova said delivering her annual report to the parliament, ForUm correspondent reports.

She underlined that according to the official statistics, the poverty rate in Ukraine is 24%. "But almost every eighth citizen falls into the category of extreme poverty, which means they cannot fully participate in public life because of their poverty, lack of basic knowledge and capabilities," Karpachyova said.

At the same time Karpachyova noted that families with children and residents of rural areas suffer from poverty most of all.

The Ombudsman also noted that the 'Ukrainian phenomenon' is the poverty of working population, as well as the automatic transition to the category of poor people of those who retire, due to the low level of pensions.
