The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed in its first reading a draft bill "On changes to the Family Code of Ukraine" regarding the increase of minimal marriage age.
The draft bill has been supported by 226 out of 302 MPs registered in the hall.
The draft bill provides for establishing equal marriage age for men and women at 18 years old.
According to the current legislation, the marriage age for men is 18 years old and for women - 17 years old.
The draft bill also provides for establishment of exceptional minimal marriage age at 16 years only for extraordinary situations. According to the current legislation, exceptional minimal marriage age is 14 years old.
