In the European Parliament’s resolution from February 25, 2010 on the situation in Ukraine, the parliamentarians urged the Ukrainian leadership to review the country's electoral legislation.

"MEPs regret the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of highly-controversial amendments to the presidential electoral law, proposed by the Party of Regions just a few days before the second round. The country's electoral legislation should be reviewed," says the resolution.

On February 3, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On Elections of the President of Ukraine" (re Organization of Work of the Election Commissions) that was submitted by the Party of Regions. Despite calls by Yulia Tymoshenko to veto it, then President Viktor Yushchenko signed the law the following day and it went into effect on February 5.
