President Viktor Yushchenko left for Chisinau, Moldova, where he is taking part in the Summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, president's press office reported.

Ukraine sees the CIS as a platform for intergovernmental consultations and negotiation; therefore President’s participation in the Chisinau Summit is viewed as the opportunity to continue the political dialogue at the level of Heads of State of the Commonwealth.

Being one of the founding states of the CIS, Ukraine however did not acceded to the CIS Charter. The observer status allows our country to fully participate in the activities of the Commonwealth and freely choose the format and level of participation in certain areas of multilateral cooperation, based on the foreign policy priorities of Ukraine.

Program for the visit of the President of Ukraine foresees his participation in the meeting of CIS leaders in the narrow and expanded formats.

Also during the visit President Yushchenko is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Acting President of the Republic of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Vlad Filat.
