Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has called on the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to protect Ukrainians if they are discriminated against while trying to get visas to EU member-states.

"I am asking the Foreign Ministry to tell our ambassadors and consuls that their duty is to protect Ukrainians," Yuschenko said at a meeting dedicated to the Ukrainian-EU relations in settling visa and migration issues on Friday, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

If the visa facilitation agreement between Ukraine and the European Union is violated and Ukrainians are discriminated against, [and they] are required to submit unjustifiably large packages of documents to be issued visas, for instance, Ukraine should react.

"We should respond clearly and promptly if the conditions of the agreement are not observed," he said.
