Deputy Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert considers that adoption of new Constitution through referendum is not necessary positive. He said that in Strasburg.

“In general, adoption of a new Constitution at the referendum is not unusual and maybe it is a good way… On the other hand, taking into consideration referendums experience on constitutional issues in Ukraine, I can say that it is not positive way,” he said, commenting on Yushchenko’s proposition to adopt a new Constitution at the referendum, UNIAN reports.

Markert noted that Venice Commission can't exclude possibility of referendum but also can’t support it.

“As for me, it is necessary to find compromise between main sides of Ukrainian political specter for Constitution to be fulfilled. But not to impose it to one or another side,” he noted.
