Yesterday, November 16 Victor Yushchenko attended a ceremony in Kyiv’s Ukraine Palace to mark the 100-year anniversary of the Vadym Hetman National Economic University, commonly known as Narkhoz, president's press office reported.

In his speech, the President said Ukraine’s prominent personalities, such as film director Oleksandr Dovzhenko, poet Pavlo Tychyna, physiologist Oleksandr Bohomolets and engineer Evhen Paton, had studied or worked in it.

“These names prove that your university has been raising not only the country’s economic elite but also national leaders,” he said.

Yushchenko said he was particularly pleased the school was named after Vadym Hetman.

“As a person that spent many years with Vadym Hetman, I am always happy to remember the times when we worked with Vadym Petrovych in the Bank “Ukraine” and the National Bank of Ukraine. His professional and human wisdom helped him build our financial system from scratch,” he said.

Yushchenko said the university has reinforced its reputation in the past one hundred years.

“There are many things you can be proud of. Your high school is a flagman in the development of economic education in Ukraine, a founder of curriculums and an educator of great professionals. I am proud to know that the Vadym Hetman University is one of the best higher education establishments in Ukraine,” he said.

He added that the university was the most popular economic school in Ukraine according to the Sofia Kyivska popularity survey and has been the biggest economic school since it was founded.

The President praised its professors for their great professionalism, commending them for “creating Ukraine’s most powerful scientific potential in the field of economics.”

He said a real school should bring up not only professionals but also patriots.

Yushchenko said today’s students would determine the country’s course and policies in fifteen or twenty years.

“I want to see in this group of young people those who will lead Ukraine on its path to the EU and NATO,” he said.

The President presented awards to a few university professors and decorated its rector with the Order of State.

Education Minister Stanislav Nikolayenko, Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Viktor Bondar, NEU Rector Anatoly Pavlenko and Vadym Hetman’s widow Valentyna Hetman attended the celebration.
