On September 19 Kyiv hosted the EU-supported round table on legal aspects of implementation of the system of medical standards in Ukraine, the press release out on Wednesday reports.

The round table was held within the framework of EU project „Support to the development of system of medical standards in Ukraine”.

Participants of the event stressed that the approximation of the quality of medical care in Ukraine to the best international practice significantly depends on the legal status of new medical standards, developed for the first time on principles of evidence-based medicine.

Analyzing the most optimum variants of effective application of medical standards, participants of meeting discussed legal consequences of this process, rights and responsibilities of both patients and physicians. They emphasized the necessity of harmonization of the legal status of medical standards with the existing legislation in the field of healthcare, in particular The Law on Fundamentals of Healthcare.

The round table included a discussion concerning differences of medical standards developed within the project from the presently legislatively defined standards including social norms in the healthcare field.

Suggestions of the round table participants will be included to the Program of national strategic planning of development of the system of medical standards in Ukraine. The Program will be presented to the Ukrainian medical public on October, 9, at the conference in Kyiv. The Program is one of results of project activities.

The project «Support to the development of system of medical standards in Ukraine» is managed by the international department of Northern Ireland social services and healthcare NI-CO (Great Britain) and Catalonian Institute of Health (Spain) in close cooperation with Ministry of health of Ukraine.

Thirty Ukrainian experts on primary and secondary healthcare, professionals in informational technologies, economic issues, legislation, study and quality control take part in the implementation of the project. They work in cooperation with international experts from Great Britain, Germany, Holland, Italy, Russia, Slovak Republic and Spain.

The initiative was working under new methodology of creation and application of medical standards of international level on the example of 15 diseases most actual for Ukraine.

The project is funded by the European Union. The extent of EU support amounts to ?2 million.
