In Baghdad, Victor Yushchenko met with Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari. The Iraqi colleague thanked him for professionalism of our peacekeepers, stressing that security was extremely important for Iraq, and expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian troops for their priceless contribution in the restoration of peace and order in the country, the President's press office reported.

He also said the presence of the Ukrainian soldiers marked the beginning of bilateral relations between the states, and expressed confidence that in 2006 we would accelerate our economic cooperation.

Yushchenkostressedit was important toenhance cooperation with Iraq. Hesaid Ukraine was interested in projects to restore the republic.The President added that, apart from military and trade cooperation, Ukraine was ready to implement projects to renovate transportation network and water-supply systems and to explore and produce oil and gas. We can also invite Iraqi students to practice atUkrainian universities and wish to sell our agricultural equipment, transportation and passenger planes to Iraq.

“The presence of the Ukrainian troops in Iraq has laid the foundationof new relations between Ukraine and Iraq,” he said, adding that he wished the Iraqi Embassy to resume its diplomatic mission in Ukraine.

Jaafari accepted Yushchenko's invitationto visit Ukraine in May 2006. They plan to sign a Ukraine-Iraq Action Plan, which will beelaborated inMarch by an intergovernmental working group.
