(AP) Two miners were killed in separate accidents in eastern Ukraine, the Emergency Situations Ministry said September 26.

A rock fall at a depth of 700 meters (2,300 feet) early Sept. 26 killed a miner in the Talivska mine in the eastern Luhansk region, the ministry said.

Another miner died September 25 while conducting repair works at a depth of 370 meters (1,200 feet) in the Rossiya mine in the eastern Donetsk region. Emergency officials blamed a violation of security rules, Kiev Post reported.

Ukraine has some of the world's most dangerous mines, due to outdated equipment and poor safety standards. Since the 1991 Soviet collapse, nearly 4,300 miners have been killed in mining accidents.
