In January, 2014, 5,500 Ukrainians received free secondary legal aid. The relevant authorities (Centers for free secondary legal aid) issued 5,824 requests for its provision to lawyers, according to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

Out of them, 1,805 requests were issued for the provision of legal aid to persons detained on suspicion of committing a criminal offense; 3,619 – for dock defense; 224 - for legal assistance to persons subjected to administrative detention; 156 - for individual proceedings.

The total number of requests issued to lawyers to provide free secondary legal aid is up by 25% year-on-year. It is due to an increased number of issued secondary for dock defense by 85% and for participation in individual proceedings by 30%.

According to experts, a significant contribution to the establishment of the institute of free legal assistance, such as we see it today, has been made through the adoption of the new Criminal Procedure Code, Part 3, Article 20 of which gives citizens the right to receive free legal assistance in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Free Legal Aid."
