During yesterday's mass clashes in the center of Kyiv police was entitled to use firearms, head of department for mass and sport activities of the department of public security of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine Oleh Matveitsev stated.
"This is provided by Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine "On police," he said.
He explained that this article clearly states that in the case of group attacks on police officers that threaten their lives and health, the law enforcement officers have the right to use firearms.
"Yesterday, the police did not act as tough as the law allowed them in such situation," he said.
The head of the department also noted that water cannons were used yesterday only to extinguish fires caused by the protesters.
