The draft bill on criminal liability for libel was adopted in accordance with good practices of European countries and the US, Party pf Regions MP Vadym Kolesnichenko told a press conference, a ForUm's correspondent reports.
"Criminal responsibility for libel and insult exists in a number of European countries, including Austria, Albania, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, and the torch of democracy US," he said.
Kolesnichenko also specified that punishment for this crime varies. "In the US, for example, offenders face up to 250 thousand dollars of fine or 10 years of imprisonment. An expression of face or sms can be considered there as libel. However, we have taken only the part regarding fines or maximum two years of community work in case the distribution of false information lead to grave consequences," the MP said.
At the same time the MP underlined that journalist investigation had always been and would be welcomed. "However, I believe a person must respond for the words he say or writes in mass media," he added.
In turn, MP Volodymyr Oliynyk pointed out that those who write truth have nothing to fear.
