The Central Election Commission (CEC) has asked the Constitutional Court to explain whether citizens with a criminal record can run for Ukrainian president, the commission's press service reported.

The commission approved the text of an appeal to the Constitutional Court on this subject at a meeting on Thursday.

In its motion the CEC asked the Constitutional Court to give an official interpretation of the provisions of Paragraph 20, Part 1, Article 92, Parts 2 and 6 of Article 103 of the Constitution of Ukraine and Part 4 of Article 9 of the law of Ukraine on the election of the Ukrainian president in terms of the question whether a Ukrainian citizen who was convicted for committing an intentional crime can be nominated and registered as a candidate for the post of president and be elected president if this criminal record was not cancelled or withdrawn in accordance with the law, Interfax-Ukraine informed.
