The government added the State Service of Ukraine on Medications and the Ministry of Health to the list of central executive authorities responsible for fulfilling the obligations of Ukraine for the international organizations. These changes were approved by the Cabinet’s Decree #894 dated Dec. 4, 2013, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine reports.

The decree will ensure proper implementation of international obligations in the field of standards and quality control of medications, as well as full participation of state regulatory bodies in the development of European standards for quality medications.

It should be reminded that the Law of Ukraine "On Ukraine's accession to the Convention on the Elaboration of an European Pharmacopoeia” came into effect on Nov. 20, 2012. According to the law, Ukraine was awarded status of a member of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission with the right to vote. The European quality standards for medications are now mandatory for Ukraine.

The European Directorate for Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM) of the Council of Europe is responsible for the functioning of the Technical Secretariat of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission, which was basically called the European Pharmacopoeia for a long time. It was founded in 1964 after the Convention on Elaboration of the European Pharmacopoeia was adopted. According to industry experts, the European Pharmacopoeia seeks to contribute to preservation of public health providing universal standards to be used by health service personnel and employees of other services related to the quality of medications.
