A meeting of the Ukrainian-Slovak group on environmental monitoring and protection of the Tisza River boundary waters was concluded recently in Uzhgorod, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine reports.

During the meeting, environmental experts discussed the implementation of the work plan for cooperation and environmental monitoring of the quality of the Tisza River boundary waters in 2013 and the ecological “Road Map” of joint environmental measures in the near future.

Experts note that a joint inspection of water quality at five frontier points is held in the framework of bilateral cooperation. Ecologists selected and tested 88 water samples in 2013. The expert reports showed significant improvement in water quality, which is the evidence of final recovery of the Tisza River biological system after the environmental accident on the Romanian gold mine in 2000. Then over 100,000 cubic meters of water was poisoned with cyanides poured in the Tisza.

Slovakia expressed interest in the Ukrainian government Program on ecological rehabilitation of the Tisza basin for 2013-2021. The Slovak ecologists are sure that the efforts of Ukraine, through which the Tisza flows, can have just local effects. Therefore, the parties should coordinate their efforts and create an international plan of specific environmental actions.

Thus, jointly with their European colleagues, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine will take part in the construction of water treatment plants, create flood control mechanisms, and launch comprehensive environmental monitoring. In general, the Tisza rehabilitation program implies over a 100 different projects for over 4 billion UAH, according to preliminary estimates.
