A big breakthrough within the reform of mental health care in Ukraine has become a government purchase of medicines for the treatment of children with mental disorders. This was announced by chief part-time child psychiatrist of the Health Ministry Igor Martsenkovsky at a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

"2013 is a significant year as for the first time in the history of child psychiatry, at least in times of independent Ukraine, there have been allocated money for purchase of drugs, psychotropic medications for children with mental disorders. Psychiatry has never been a priority. It has always been on the periphery of consciousness. And child psychiatry, unfortunately, has been on the periphery of consciousness of general psychiatry," Martsenkovsky said.

According to him, the drugs for children with autism spectrum disorders were purchased at a fairly large amount of 10 million hryvnia.

"This has significantly changed the situation in many regions," the doctor said.
