Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov confirmed the European integration course of Ukraine. He stated this in his speech in the Yevropeiska Square in Kiev, where the rally in support of the authorities is held, ForUm correspondent reports.

"They think (opposition and protesters, who support it- Ed.) that signing of the Agreement (Association with EU - Ed.) leads to the EU membership, but it’s not so. We were not promised European prospects. However, we do not abandon the course of European integration, because it lies primarily in the modernization of the country: new schools, hospitals and roads, and it is necessary to be dealt with every day," PM said.

Azarov said that the government had made a mistake of not explaining what threats signing of the Agreement with the EU posed.

"I am often asked what we thought when we decided to postpone the signing of the Agreement. We thought about Ukrainians, about those who are here and those, who are 500 meters from here. We thought about the east and west, thought about saving jobs, wages and pensions. That decision was very difficult," Azarov said.

The Premier noted that Ukraine should take a strong position in order to gain respect from both its partners - the European Union and the Russian Federation.
