The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton will visit Kyiv on December 10-11 for talks with President Viktor Yanukovych, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said during a meeting on Europe’s future in Milan, Italy, on Monday.
He said he had spoken to President Yanukovych over the phone the day before and asked him to receive Mrs. Ashton, who intended to come to Kiev for a couple of days to be able to participate in resolving the complicated situation in Ukraine.
Barroso urged Yanukovych not to use force against peaceful protesters.
The majority of Ukrainians, not just in western areas but throughout the country, are perfectly aware of economic growth opportunities arising from an association agreement with the EU and want peace and stability, he said, adding that "it’s our duty" to recognize them.
