Kyiv police explained the reason for breaking up protests in the Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square in Kyiv. As ForUm correspondent learnt from spokeswoman of the Kyiv Interior Ministry department Olga Bilyk, clashes occurred because of a conflict among protesters and officers of the "Berkut" special forces.

"Yesterday, we were addressed by the Kyiv municipal improvement department with a written request to provide movement of transport, which subsequently had to take part in preparations of the square for New Year holidays. When the technique started approaching the Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square, protesters behaved aggressively and not let cars, despite warnings over a loudspeaker that their actions were illegal. After that, officers of the "Berkut" special forces were involved. Protesters were also warned about the responsibility for their actions, but some of them behaved aggressively, throwing burning logs, cans, glasses, garbage to police officers. After that, "Berkut" officers used non-lethal weapons and drove people away from Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square," Olga Bilyk said.

According to her, 31 protesters were detained for resisting and hooliganism. Most of them have been already released. The rest will be released after drawing up of administrative materials. 

At the same time, she said, the exact number of the injured in the clashes is unknown, there are no killed. According to a report from one of the doctors, about 15 people were injured, but this is not an exact figure," she said.
