The United States condemns the forceful breaking up of the rally in the Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square in Kyiv, a statement of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, published on its website, says.
"We urge the government of Ukraine to respect the rights of civil society and the principles of freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, which are fundamental to democratic values and the cornerstone of our strategic partnership," the statement reads.
The Embassy noted that the United States supports the right of citizens to express their views through a free media and non-violent demonstrations.
"We urge the Government of Ukraine to create a positive environment for civil society and freedom of expression among citizens of Ukraine," the statement says.
