Ukraine confirms its intention to sign the Association Agreement with the EU in the near future, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said at the plenary session of the summit of "Eastern Partnership", ForUm correspondent reports from Vilnius.
According to the President, Ukraine and the EU reached the final stage of the agreement conclusion. "I am convinced that it will open a new page in the development of the Ukrainian state, will bring to a new level our relations with the EU and its member countries. I confirm the intention to sign the agreement in the near future," he stressed.
Yanukovych stressed that Ukraine and Europe have negotiated and searched for a compromise for more than six years. "In this way we have to do a few last crucial steps. It's about preparing prerequisites to ensure maximum results from the implementation of the Agreement. I’m sure that Ukraine and the European Union will decently pass this final stage. Its main task should be to carry out a program of joint measures aimed at adaptation of Ukrainian economy to the new realities," the President said.
He noted that Ukraine should prepare not only for timely implementation of the Association Agreement, but also to minimize the negative effects of the initial period, which will certainly be felt by the most vulnerable segments of Ukrainians.
"This requires our joint work on the program of economic assistance to Ukraine, which will allow preparation for the signing of the Agreement. In our opinion, such a program should be a joint effort of the EU and Ukraine. As a result of this work, existing contradictions would be removed giving the opportunity to sign the Agreement and to move along a specific strategic path of European integration without serious loss to the national economy," Yanukovych concluded.
