The Cabinet of Ministers has passed a decree "On signing of General statement on cooperation in the field of extension of the satellite-based augmentation system EGNOS to the Ukrainian territory between Ukraine and the European Commission", the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine reports.

Experts say the EGNOS project will improve the transport safety in Ukraine, particularly air transport, and will also help achieve goals of the future Agreement on the Common Aviation Area between Ukraine and the EU and its member states.

The EGNOS project is based on the Co-operation Agreement on a Civil Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signed between Ukraine and the European Union.

As explained by Cabinet analysts, the decree empowered Oleksandr Vilkul, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, to sign with Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, general statements to expand the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) on the territory of Ukraine.

Experts at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade say EGNOS is the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service. It is designed to improve performance of GPS , GLONASS and Galileo systems  in Europe and is similar to WAAS  in the USA.
